Located in northwest Nevada, Carson City, marks the intersection of U.S. highways 50 and 395. At an elevation is 4,697' and covering a 155 square miles area, Carson City is located 14 miles east of Lake Tahoe, 30 miles south of Reno, 228 miles east of San Francisco, and 437 miles northwest of Las Vegas. Carson City's climate is warm and dry with cool evenings in the summer, while winters are cold and dry.

Community

There is a wide selection of well-situated land for industrial and commercial development. A variety of buildings for manufacturing and office use are also available in the Carson City area. The Carson Airpark, located near the general aviation airport, is zoned for light industrial purposes and is the primary industrial area. Retail and commercial trade has flourished in recent years, with several national retailers expanding their current facilities or relocating to the Carson City area.  An open-for-business attitude, managed growth, low taxes, less regulatory actions, less crime, and an overall lower cost of doing business are some of the reasons why Nevada and the Carson City area continue to attract relocating business, professional and industrial firms. Nevada’s tax structure is considered to be conservative and less burdensome than that of many other states. There is no state personal income tax and Nevada does not levy franchise, unitary, inventory, inheritance or corporate profit taxes. Carson City’s current highest property tax rate is $2.6841 per $100 of assessed valuation. Sales and use taxes imposed on the retail sales of tangible personal property is currently seven percent. Most services, utilities, food for home consumption, and prescription drugs are exempt from this sales tax. Education

The Carson City School District provides quality educational services to the entire community with one high school, two middle schools and six elementary schools serving a total student enrollment of over 8,000 students. In a cooperative venture, the community college and the high school recently constructed a technology center on the high school campus. There are four private elementary schools, a special education school, and several private business and vocational schools in Carson City. Carson City is also home to Western Nevada Community College (WNCC), one of the fastest growing colleges in the state and a major contributor to the local economy. WNCC is a two-year public institution providing high-quality education to residents throughout the area. Over 5,000 full-time students receive instruction in the arts, science, job training, basic skills, and other university transfer programs. WNCC also coordinates with local business and industry designing specialized training programs in machine tooling, drafting, electronics, computing and occupational skills. Graduates in applied science programs can gain an associate degree and be job-ready in nursing, criminal justice, child development, and many other fields. A variety of community service classes are well tailored to the needs and interests of area residents.

History

Nevada's territorial and state capital has a rich and colorful frontier past. Carson City was founded as a community in 1858, seven years after the first settlement of Eagle Station trading post in 1851. Carson City is named for the nearby Carson River, which explorer John C. Fremont named after their 1843-44 expedition for his scout: the famous frontiersman Christopher "Kit" Carson. Pioneer Abraham Curry arrived in Eagle Valley in 1858 and soon thereafter surveyed and platted a town site. The farsighted and optimistic Abe Curry set aside 10 acres expressly for the construction of a capitol-- this was before the formation of Nevada Territory in 1861. Carson City was soon designated both the territorial capital and county seat of the new Ormsby County. President Abraham Lincoln, recognizing the importance of Nevada's silver and gold to the Union's Civil War effort, signed the proclamation that ushered Nevada into statehood on October 31, 1864. Carson City was selected as the state capital at the constitutional convention and has retained that honor to the present day.
Following the discovery of gold and silver on the nearby Comstock Lode in 1859, Carson City became a thriving commercial center. The boomingmines in Virginia City, Gold Hill and Silver City resulted in quartz reduction mills being built along the Carson River to process the ore. Lumber for mine timbers and cordwood was provided from the Sierra Nevada mountains around Lake Tahoe. The Virginia and Truckee Railroad was organized in 1868 to connect the Comstock mines with the river mills and to bring lumber and supplies back to the mines. The United States Mint in Carson City was completed in 1869; it is today the site of the Nevada State Museum. Carson City rapidly became one of Nevada's principal communities in the 19th century.
